Modified Souls A modified soul or mod souls (plural; mod souls), is an umbrella term, that is used in the Bleach universe, referring to any artificially made soul; however, there's essential differences between the types of mod souls, even if they are labelled under a single title. The most important things and mods soul terms have been gathered to this thread, so read it thoroughly; Overview: There is three "sub-species", which are all considered to be under the term 'modified soul', and a fourth group, that is tied to one of the three. Kaizō Konpaku, literally translated as "modified soul", refers to a type of modified artificial souls, whose name later became the term for any soul, that has been artificially created and modified; the products of soul cloning technology, carry the name of, "Reigai" (a name, which has alternate meanings in different fields of research), and they are directly tied to the original concept of modified soul. The Gikon are the first type of artificial souls, that the two above types descend from, and though the term accurately refers to artificial souls, rather than modified souls, they are categorized under the umbrella term. The final type of modified souls are the artificial shinigami, which is considered separate from the other types, in the sense, that they are artificially-made entities (includes both the soul and the body, in which the soul permanently resides in), while other types appear to be sealed in the form of a round pill; they are classified under the umbrella term of modified souls, as they are based on the Gikon and Gigai technology. Kaizō Konpaku: The first modified souls were created on the basis of idea of Gikon, the artificial souls; nearly all of them were created in the Project Spearhead, with the purpose of harnessing the dead corpses of shinigami into war machines. The scientist and researchers of the project, developed a type of Gikon, that could be placed into a soul-less vessel; it could possess an animal, a corpse, a body which's host is absent, or even to an inanimate object. The technology, that they were created with, would grant them the power to augment their vessel's physiology, namely the traits of strength, speed, durability and senses; however, the late research included concepts of enhancing the vessel's spiritual and mental capabilities, to the level of making the vessel awaken some psychic or spiritual powers. The purpose of these enhancements were to make the modified Gikon to be able to battle against hollows on equal ground, which was a success. The technology was presumed to be created by Ōko Yushima, about a ninety-five years ago, but the first days after discovery of an alternate universe revealed, that a shinigami going by the name of Marie Takeda, developed the concept of modified souls, over six hundred years ago, in the alternate universe. However, both of the projects went terribly wrong - or at least, that's how it's represented in the history books of Soul Society - and the modified souls were outlawed and hunted down. The truth behind the event, known as "Spearhead Incident", was, that the wise men of 46 Chambers were terribly afraid; fearful for something they did not understand. You see, the modified souls weren't meant to have a soul, but the ambitious leaders of the project had emphasized the importance of this (a fun fact, the artificial souls, Gikon, do not actually possess a soul; they are merely beings akin to a soul), thus leading to the unexpected development of the modified souls. For something so artificial, the modified souls are incredibly independent, naturally capable of surviving on their own (something, that Gikon couldn't do), and as much human as a shinigami would be. They sure as hell are war machines, but their loyalty was formed out of respect and gratitude for their creators, rather than out of compulsive need; at first, disappointed, the Central 46 deemed them unusable, due to their lack of blind discipline and unwavering loyalty. However, when the modified souls were perfected, they would begin to manifest a personality, ask questions, experience emotions, have doubts, make their own decisions and believe in what they themselves thought to be true and right. You can imagine, that if the powers that be were concerned for the modified souls having their own thoughts, how they reacted to this; the mistake they made was announcing their decision an hour before they sent their men to shut down the project and arrest the researchers involved with the project. The men successfully arrested every scientist, erased the essential knowledge about creation of modified souls, before Division 3 would step in and erase the memories of everyone, who had ever seen the formula or parts of it; others, the unluckiest of the researchers, were sent to Maggot's Nest. But as said, the Central 46 made the mistake of giving the head researchers of the project an hour. Not a single piece of Ōko Yushima's research could not be found, and so, the original copy of the "recipe" of modified soul was lost; the researcher himself was found in a catatonic state, and when the shinigami got inside his head, in search for the whereabouts of his research, they found nothing - only what little was remaining of his soul. Of course, the research is still somewhere, and so is the two pieces of Yushima's souls, that he carved out of his body, before the shinigami could arrest him. In the alternate universe, the head researcher of project, Marie Takeda, had feared the day, that her "children" were hunted down like animals - she had made some preparations, and when the day finally came, she was ready. Placing twenty of her children inside the shinigami, who had came to shut down the project, and hiding the most important things of her research, unbeknownst to the Central 46, she allowed herself to be "arrested" - after she was behind the bars, her children had a good chance of fleeing Soul Society and disappearing from the radar of shinigami, and so they did, along with her research. Because she had not committed any crimes, she was eventually released, when the investigation was over and her research was thought to be destroyed. A mistake, the superiors would later repeat, in the wake of her defection; but the female researcher had already out of the reach of the shinigami, hiding in the World of Living. However, that was only the beginning of her story, not the end; she'd come to sire more modified souls. Gikon: Coming Soon! Reigai: Accurately, the term doesn't refer to the type of modified souls, that are known as "Reigai"; 'spirit body', refers to the body of any spiritual being, acting as the opposite of the bodies of living things - it's used in the spiritual sciences way less often, than it is in the alternate meaning. In the field of modified soul technology, a Reigai means an artificially manufactured, soulless body, that is often compared to a Gigai, which acts as the physical counterpart of a Reigai. While a Gigai in an artificially manufactured, physical body, that has been invented with the purpose of putting the soul of a shinigami within it, a Reigai is more akin to the shinigami's body, though only an artificial version of it - the more physical Gigai can only operate in World of Living, as the bodies of living cannot leave their home dimension without a significant amount of spiritual pressure, or a special token made for the purpose, whilst a Reigai appears invisible and undetectable to regular humans, and functions in all dimensions, much like the shinigami's body; a Gigai is made of kinshi, while a Reigai is made of reishi. When uninhabited, a Reigai appears like a generic mannequin, but when a soul enters it, the appearance changes to match that of the soul in question - similarly, any powers come directly from the soul, rather than from the empty body. It is used by the shinigami to experiment on the artificial souls, and formerly on the modified souls, in a more physical manner, while in Soul Society. However, in terms of actual modified souls, a Reigai can mean so much more than an artificial body of reishi. The secret masterpiece of Ōko Yushima, perfected right before his project got shut down; a testament of both his dedication to the pursuit of modified souls and his creativity, the technology of "Red Gikon", alternatively known as "Reigai", is exclusive to him - and since his research was lost, the technique hasn't been utilized by anyone. Like any Gikon, a Reigai is bound to a round pill, red-colored in the case of Yushima's special modified souls; they need a spirit body as their vessel, rather than a Gigai, thus explaining the alternate name's meaning. Yushima experimented with collecting data and implanting it to this red pill, which was then moved into a Reigai, that would take the form and skills assigned to it - he would go as far as cloning a soul, modifying it, and then place it in a spirit body, thus creating a perfect, enhanced clone of a shinigami. However, the Project Spearhead was shut down, before he had a chance to present it to his superiors, and ended up in Dangai, in the events of Spearhead Incident. Artificial Shinigami: Coming Soon! |
