Fuma's life before becoming a shinigami was closely tied to the Gesshou clan. Being the heir of a branch of the clan that tried to stage a coup, he was raised to consider himself as one of the ruling class. This has led to his development of a superiority complex. While he was alive he went so far as to murder the heir of the main branch by exposing him to sunlight which proved fatal due to a rare skin condition. Shortly afterwards he was tried and killed for treason, but somehow he did not find himself thrown into hell nor did he become a hollow. Fuma holds a strong belief that he was right to fight the main branch for what had been done to his own father.
Regardless of who was truly right or wrong, that experience has made Fuma all the more cold and distant from others who are not of any type of royalty or or nobility. If you aren't special, then you're trash to Fuma. His ability to lead others as part of a strict team is exceptional and he holds himself with a demeanor worthy of the heir to a noble family even under the most dire of circumstances. For this, he was scouted into the Onmitsukido and became 3rd seat of the Division putting him in charge of the Patrol Corps.
Fuma isn't quick to anger, but he is incredibly swift to look down on others and show them spite or malice. This mas made him somewhat feared among those of his division. However his accomplishments on the battlefield and the times he's saved every ones lives have been more than enough to earn their respect as well. This lets him get away with being so harsh to people not of high status.
