Personality: Benigane is a laidback, calm, easygoing individual, who likes running away and leaving his paperwork for any subordinate he can find. This makes him appear to be very unserious and lazy, and coupled with the fact that he looks very young for his age, people may be tempted not to respect him. He is however very popular among the girls.
Whichever the case, Benigane is quite old, and according to himself, desperately needs rest. He doesn't care if the Gotei 13 has older folk around; in his opinion, they enjoy being Captains, and like what they do. Benigane doesn't. In truth, he is a formerly retired Captain, who was compelled by the Captain Commander to return to service after the Captain who had taken his place was discovered to be a Visored and executed. And as soon as anyone is strong enough to take Benigane's place, he is intent on running back to Rukongai and bidding Seireitei farewell.
Benigane loves quietness, tea and arts, and is also a fan of soccer, although he has no idea which teams are which when a match is going on. Against popular belief, he is very charismatic, and is exceptionally good at rallying people and raising morale even in the darkest hour. Ever an optimist, nothing can dampen the mood of this Shinigami. He has the bad habit of referring to anyone younger than him as 'kid', even if they are Captains.

Zanpakutou: Asagake [Morning Shard]
A white and steel katana in its sealed state, Asagake is released by the command: Katte! (Prevail!)
Shikai: On releasing Asagake, Asagake appears as a white nodachi and a glowing banner, connected by a spectral ribbon.
Asagake's power revolves round the concept of burdens. Benigane can 'increase' or 'reduce' the 'burdens' of up to 3 targets at a time, making them faster or slower, respectively. He can also 'increase' the 'burden' of his arm, making his blows much heavier. Benigane can also speed up or slow down spiritual energy, affecting the speeds of kidou, cero, etc.
Bankai: Mugen Shogun Asagake [Infinite Shogun Asagake]: On releasing his bankai, Benigane wields two large cleavers, while a giant spectral banner floats over the battlefield. In bankai, everything in a radius of 100 meters except Benigane is burdened. Even kidou and other energy attacks slow down, whether they be from a friend or foe. Only Benigane does not. In bankai, Benigane can still choose to lift people's burdens (up to 10 people now) or afflict them with greater burdens than his bankai has already imposed.
Benigane is a master of zanjutsu and shunpo. He can use a number of kidou, but it is obvious he would rather use his sword to fight. His reiatsu level has been noted to be very high, going so far as being intimidating even among his fellow Captains. Although Benigane is a very straightforward combatant, he is quite intelligent and can second-guess an opponent easily in combat, due to his high IQ and experience.
