First Shibutani – Their original name is unknown, however, they were born in the human world and reincarnated into the Soul Society. They made a living starting off as builders, creating the wooden houses, some of which still standing in the historical districts of the Rukongai, closer to the Seireitei. As their construction business grew, they began to hire other builders. Their first large scale construction was the large Shibutani Tower, due to the location, which was mostly valley, slowly becoming dotted with more and more buildings. Because of the tower, the family was given the name of “Shibutani”.
Shibutani Taisen – Born a century prior to the beginning of the Seireitei, the second generation in his family to be born there, his parents both arriving from the Human world. He inherited their construction company, turning the business also into a real-estate agency, buying out territory throughout the Soul Society. The land which became the Seireitei was held under his monetary control, however, at the time, many normal citizens lived there paying rent ultimately to Taisen.
When the Shinigami were first getting started, Taisen wanted to join in. He was a mediocre fighter among the captains, but was certainly talented as a Shinigami, being the third (pending change) Shinigami in history to achieve Bankai. As more and more people joined this new group, there was more and more demand to house them all. With people moving out of the Seireitei in favor of newer locations, or simply wanting to explore more of the Rukon, Taisen found it difficult to break even on a lot of his properties. Thusly, he had evicted the few remaining residents of the area, cleared the area for construction, and rebuilt it into the Seireitei, even hiring construction workers to put up the Sekkisekki wall. Shibutani Tower became the barracks of the 5th Division (pending) of the Gotei 13, and Taisen became the first captain of the 5th Division.
Shibutani Ouja – The grand son of Taisen Shibutani and the Second Captain of the 5th Division with his father as his lieutenant, at least when they began. His father, unable to achieve bankai, had remained in that position until his own death from old age. He was the first Shinigami to locate a vasto lordes class hollow, purify the vasto lordes, and return alive. In addition, it was he who secured the tradition of the Shibutani family providing outstanding captains to the 5th Division, and the Shibutani had historically provided a majority of captains to the 5th Division.
Shibutani Jun – Current Captain of the 9th Division. Disowned by the family for initially not meeting their expectations. He has been offered chances to return and has, however has kept the spelling of his name different in order to keep himself separate. He has four siblings who are still representative of the clan.
